🚨 Pulse of Innovation 🚨

Breaking news in the healthcare AI

  • Nvidia and Hippocratic AI have partnered to create low-cost virtual nurses, i.e. AI nurses, who will focus on interventions like pre-op services, chronic care management, remote patient monitoring, and new medication onboarding. This tool can address the nurse shortage and increase accessibility.

  • However, replacing nurses with AI tools is not that simple! What creates a positive change for patients is not AI, but Human + AI, or what we call Collaborative AI. There are ethical considerations regarding patient safety and the potential for undercutting human nurses' wages, which could worsen the nursing shortage.

Developments in healthcare AI research and innovations

  • Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) is a theoretical AI that matches human capabilities, including reasoning and learning, which researchers believe could be decades or even centuries away.

  • While current AI technologies like ChatGPT demonstrate remarkable prediction abilities, they lack AGI's nuanced understanding and cognitive abilities, encompassing emotional intelligence and possibly conscious understanding.

  • The question is, when is AGI coming? No one knows. Some say in 5 years, and others say longer. As clinicians, we need to learn and be prepared, as AGI is undoubtedly on the horizon.

Real-world and practical use of healthcare AI in clinic

  • DAX Copilot from Nuance Communication, a Microsoft company, has a listening App that will listen to doctor-patient communications after patient consent. The conversation will then be transformed into a physician's note through their AI-powered technology.

  • Stanford Healthcare started a pilot project in the fall of 2023 with 48 physicians from different specialties, such as cardiology, primary care, and orthopedics. A survey showed that 96% of physicians found the technology easy to use, 78% found it expedited note-taking, and over 60% found it saved time. Stanford is rolling this out to a broader group now.

Trending startups and technologies impacting clinical practice

  •  Zephyr AI, a healthcare AI company developing machine learning-based federated tools for precision healthcare modeling and focusing on oncology and cardiometabolic diseases, raised $111 million in series A funding, where Eli Lilly was one of the investors.

  • Zephyr primarily uses real-world data to develop machine learning-based tools to improve diagnosis and outcomes in oncology and cardiometabolic areas, which are the two leading causes of death in the USA. According to company executives, the funding will help accelerate their efforts in consolidating and expanding real-world data to enhance their AI platforms.

Ethical and regulatory landscape of healthcare AI

  • Public Discomfort and Skepticism: A Pew Research Center survey revealed that 60% of Americans would feel uncomfortable if their healthcare providers relied on AI for diagnoses and treatment recommendations, indicating significant public skepticism about AI's efficacy in improving health outcomes.

  • Ethical and Relationship Concerns: Many are concerned about AI's impact on the patient-provider relationship, with 57% believing it would worsen the relationship. There are also mixed views on AI's ability to address biases in healthcare, though a notable portion sees potential for improvement.

  • Caution over Rapid Adoption: The majority expresses concern about healthcare providers adopting AI too quickly without fully understanding its risks, suggesting a cautious approach toward integrating AI technologies in healthcare.
